How do I repair and maintain a sliding door?

On your wardrobes and cupboards, to separate your rooms or at window level, sliding doors are appreciated for the space they save and are commonplace in recent constructions. Despite their practicality, they can sometimes be blocked or damaged. CRH in Jette and Brussels explains how regular maintenance and a few tricks can help you repair this type of door yourself.

Vacuum the sliding mechanism

If the door gets stuck in the tracks, run a hoover along them to remove any dust. Check the edges and indentations and vacuum around the wheels of each door. Use a narrow or flat nozzle and use a toothbrush to remove as much dust as possible.

Clean the rails thoroughly

Once you’ve finished vacuuming, give the rails a thorough cleaning. Arm yourself with a sponge and a little soapy water. Brush the inside of the rail well to loosen any embedded dust that has resisted vacuuming. Once again, use the toothbrush to scrub the hardest-to-reach corners. Finally, wipe the rails with a clean, dry cloth.

Lubricate your sliding door

To avoid jamming, lubricate the tracks generously. This will prevent the sliding mechanism from squeaking and extend the life of the track, wheels and rails. A simple action that requires the use of a suitable product such as WD-40.

Check the mechanisms

If the problem persists despite these maintenance precautions and meticulous cleaning, check the operation and integrity of the rails, pivoting wheels, handle and other components. If any of these are faulty, they may need to be replaced. You can ask a specialist for advice.
